HAL allows users who are blind or partially sighted to hear rather than see what is happening on their computer screen. HAL is a software screen reader that works by reading the screen interactively and communicating through a speech synthesiser or a refreshable Braille display. Talking as you type, it announces words or characters so you can check what you write. A single button allows you to read an entire document, email or web page.
